chili rooti and scooti o rooti lango bowto
Once upon a time there were hipsters. I’m not talking about the people who moved to your neighborhood and are killing you softly with their ironic bad taste. Hipsters had good taste and were actually hip. Slim Gaillard was a hipster of the highest order. Jack Kerouac knew this and wrote books about it. In On The Road, Sal and Dean go to see Slim play in San Francisco and have a drink with him after his set. “Bourbon-orooni...thank-you-ovauti...” Slim said.
Roy Milton born this day in 1907
From Wiki:
Milton's grandmother was a Chickasaw. He was born in Wynnewood, Oklahoma and grew up on an Indian reservation before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma. He joined the Ernie Fields band in the late 1920s as singer and, later, drummer.
Moving to Los Angeles, California in 1933, he formed his own band, the Solid Senders, with Camille Howard on piano. He performed in local clubs and began recording in the 1940s, his first release being "Milton's Boogie" on his own record label. His big break came in 1946, when his "R. M. Blues", on the new Juke Box label, became a hit, reaching # 2 on the Billboard R&B chart and #20 on the pop chart. Its success helped establish Art Rupe’s company, which he shortly afterwards renamed Specialty Records.
Milton and his band became a major touring attraction, and he continued to record successfully for Specialty Records through the late 1940s and early 1950s. He recorded a total of 19 Top Ten R&B hits, the biggest being "Hop, Skip and Jump" (# 3 R&B, 1948), "Information Blues" (# 2 R&B, 1950), and "Best Wishes" (# 2 R&B, 1952).
Says it all, doesn't it?
Thomas Lifson comments: Sergeant Crowley, the sole class act in this trio, helps the handicapped Professor Gates down the stairs, while Barack Obama, heedless of the infirmities of his friend and fellow victim of self-defined racial profiling, strides ahead on his own. So who is compassionate? And who is so self-involved and arrogant that he is oblivious?

How Comrade Bill Ayers Became A Distinguished Professor Of Education
The Extreme Make-Over of William Ayers
Mary Grabar has a report on Comrade Bill Ayers:
Despite his Ed.D. degree and title as Distinguished Professor of Education, and
despite being heralded variously an “education reformer” and “a member of Chicago’s
intellectual establishment,” William Ayers’ scholarship provides little evidence of
advancement since his first job as a twenty-year-old self-described “peace activist,” when as he puts it in his memoir Fugitive Days, “I walked out of jail and into my first teaching job.”
Why are taxpayers coerced into financing Bill Ayers?

FDA in the service of Big Corn
Melinda Wenner writes in the August issue of Mother Jones about mercury content in high fructose corn syrup. Lye is an ingredient used in making HFCS, it separates corn starch from the kernel. Some chemical companies make lye by pumping salt through vats of mercury. Trace elements of mercury are then passed on to the consumer.
FDA researcher Renee Dufault sent HFCS samples from three manufacturers that used lye to labs for testing. The labs found mercury in most of the samples. When Dufault presented her findings to the FDA's center for food safety she was instructed not to do any more investigations. Not long after that the FDA took her off field investigations and put her behind a desk. She has since retired. The article isn't online yet, Mother Jones doles out content of their current issue piecemeal.
The Ethicurean talked about it back in January.

People for the American Way goes after Ricci
Supporters of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor are quietly targeting the Connecticut firefighter who's at the center of Sotomayor's most controversial ruling.
On the eve of Sotomayor's Senate confirmation hearing, her advocates have been urging journalists to scrutinize what one called the "troubled and litigious work history" of firefighter Frank Ricci.
[...]
On Friday, citing in an e-mail "Frank Ricci's troubled and litigious work history," the liberal advocacy group People for the American Way drew reporters' attention to Ricci's past. Other advocates for Sotomayor have discreetly urged journalists to pursue similar story lines.
Specifically, the advocates have zeroed in on an earlier 1995 lawsuit Ricci filed claiming the city of New Haven discriminated against him because he's dyslexic. The advocates cite other Hartford Courant stories from the same era recounting how Ricci was fired by a fire department in Middletown, Conn., allegedly, Ricci said at the time, because of safety concerns he raised.

The article names People for the American Way. Who might the other 'advocacy groups' be? Alliance for Justice perhaps? Whoever they are, trashing private citizens who have done nothing wrong is beyond the pale.

The Chavez News Network
La Gringa says, "If there are deaths in Honduras tomorrow [today], it will be the fault of false reports on the part of CNN en Español, particularly Krupskia Alis. CNN is called Chávez News Network here in Honduras."
A commenter at Fausta's Blog explains why CNN has the slant they do. It's unfortunate that other news agencies take their lead from CNN. Apparently they prefer to be led by the nose rather than do their own reporting.
>>The reporter CNN sendend to Honduras, Kruskaia, is being asisted and getting wrong information of the people who works for CHANNEL 8 (a channel Mel Zelaya took for the use of the government while he was in the power) Leyla Banegas who is the wife of Elvin Sandoval, Corresponsal of CNN and very close to Raul Valladares. CNN also receives information of their ex corresponsal Walter Fajardo, who quit CNN to work as an image assesor for Mel Zelaya. That´s why they get all the information twisted and they are causing a big problem in our country. We, the people of Honduras are actually very happy because we don´t have that man in the power.. he caused so much damage to our democracy… we are finally getting REAL DEMOCRACY with this period of transition. Please informe CNN of this relation their reporters have with the people who used to work for Zelaya´s goverment. I don´t know how to contact them directly!

King David's Palace
The debunkers of Jewish biblical history got some bad news recently, when a spunky, dedicated archaeologist began her latest dig. Dr. Eilat Mazar, world authority on Jerusalem's past, has taken King David out of the pages of the Bible and put him back into living history. Mazar's latest excavation in the City of David, in the southern shadow of the Temple Mount, has shaken up the archaeological world. For lying undisturbed for over 3,000 years is a massive building which Mazar believes is King David's palace.
